20. April 2023 Paradise in 10 square meters

The then "Haus Döbling" was one of the most modern and beautiful student residences in Europe. Almost lavish by the standards of the time: each room was around 10 square meters and had a shower niche, a built-in cupboard, a window porch with a bookshelf, two linen chests, a bed, a bookshelf and a work table with an armchair. In the first few years after it was founded, around 2000 domestic and foreign students applied for a place in a dorm every year. However, only around 60 places became available each year. For this reason, an expansion of the building was quickly planned. With the second expansion, the student dormitory was therefore almost doubled in size in the years 1968-1970. The home now had a total of 720 rooms, including so-called "family apartments", as some students had found themselves in the home and started families. Over the summer the rooms were used as hotel rooms.
